The flag site exits because of the vision and dedication of prior Committees with the generosity of the citizens of Somerset County, PA.
The current Committee is committed to the long-term maintenance of the flag site,
which is dedicated to all Somerset County veterans and to the flag pole which is dedicated to the Flight 93 heroes
If successful, our work will never be finished.

September 2017

September 6th was a busy day at the flag site.

The site was groomed by the Somerset County Work Detail of the Somerset County Jail and greatly improved the appearance of the site.

New LED lights were installed by Krause Electric. A single light was replaced by three energy efficient LED fixtures,

Check the pictures below. Our tanks to all that helped.

Thanks!
Funds have been received from American Legion Posts in Rockwood, Berlin and Somerset, and the Somerset VFW and the FOE of Somerset. These funds will cover the cost of the lighting changes. We hope to have the project completed before September 11, 2017.

July 2017

Since we intend to fly a flag all year. We hope to reduce our electric bill with an new energy efficient LED system. When the initial system was installed three lights were installed. Two of those lights were removed years ago, probably to reduce costs. The single light currently in service is a 1500 watt bulb. A three light arrangement is the preferred night lighting. The Committee has received a $1,300 quote for a three light system that will use three 26 watt LED (78 watt) lights. Installation costs will be donated by the contractor.

If you would like to support the change, a donation of any amount will be appreciated. Please mail your donation to the Committee at P O BOX 1172, Somerset, PA 15501.

Trial program to keep a flag flying

Snow Flag Pic 2 January 24, 2017

Our first pictures of the site with a flag flying in the snow.

Support of the small flag program is going well. The flag has been up since November 17, 2016 and
very little damage. Donations have been received from the following veteran's groups:
Somerset, Rockwood and Stoystown American Legion posts.

Thanks!

Our large flag was lowered for the winter.
The committee voted to run a trial program to fly a smaller flag during the winter months.
     We know:
The winter months are extremely damaging to the large flags.
They require 4 to 6 guys to raise and lower.
The large flags are expensive to replace and repair.
We all miss the flag when it is down.

On November 17, 2016, we raised a 12 foot by 18 foot nylon flag.
It will be easier to lower and raise if we have enough notice of high winds and/or ice.
One person can lower and raise the flag, if necessary - two preferred.
Replacement and repairs will be more affordable.
We hope this will allow us to keep a flag flying all year.
On April 15, 2017 the small flag was lowered for repairs and replaced by the small flag displayed during the Mega Show.
On May 9, 2017 the large flag was raised for the 2017 season..

The test program was a success. The small flag held up much better than expected. The committee will be looking into more energy efficient night lighting options.
